'Chan' is Chinese for Zen. Bodhidharma came down the mountains after meditating for nine years in the cave by Shaolin Monastery, to teach Chan (Zen) Buddhism.
The symbol itself consists of the radicals "to show" (or "demonstrate") on the left and "oneness" on the right.
