Chinese Dragons

Dragons have long been a symbol of China. Chinese Dragons have always been different in form and behaviour from dragons in European and Middle Eastern mythology. Far from being scary, fearsome creatures, in China, dragons were always believed to be benevolent and many people even believe them to be lucky.

Each Chinese dragon was believed to hold a 'pearl of wisdom' in its mouth and dragon or Long pictures were often painted this way. They were associated with waterways, clouds, rainmaking and the sea and were popular with fishermen and farmers.

In ancient Chinese folklore the dragon appears as a creature of many parts. They often have the scales and the tail of a fish, claws of an eagle, neck of a snake, ears of a bull, horns of a stag and head of a camel.
